Vaginal health

A healthy vagina contains secretions and friendly bacteria that maintain a balanced inner environment that is self-regulating and self-cleansing. In spite of this, nearly every woman will experience some form of vaginal infection during her lifetime. To maintain a healthy vagina:

Know what is normal for you. Pay attention to changes in menstruation and vaginal secretions.

Know signs of infection, such as itching, unusual odor or change in vaginal discharge.

Act promptly. Don’t assume the doctor will check. Mention your symptoms. A quick, simple and painless test can identify an infection and the proper treatment.

Don’t use non-prescription medicine unless you have been diagnosed recently with a yeast infection and have the exact same symptoms. Several common and potentially serious infections have similar symptoms, and require prescription treatment.

Use good hygiene. Keep the vaginal area clean by washing daily with mild soap. Rinse and dry well. Always wipe from front to back to avoid spreading bacteria.

Stay dry. Infectious organisms thrive on moisture, so wear cotton undergarments, avoid tight clothing in hot weather and remove wet clothing promptly.

Avoid douching, unless directed by your doctor. A healthy woman does not need to rinse her vagina. Douching can change the environment of the vagina and encourage infection. Also, avoid feminine hygiene sprays.

If taking medication, follow the directions. Take all medication as prescribed, even if the symptoms go away.
